Company History

The exciting history of the company and its roots dates back to the early nineteenth century.
The growth and development of Steyr-Daimler Puch Spezialfahrzeug GmbH is the result of the almost 140 years old history of three important historic Austrian enterprises:

· Österreichische Waffenfabrik
· Daimler Motorengesellschaft
· Puch-Werke Graz

For decades the Steyr-Works were one of the leading industrial corporations in the country and the No. 1 in the production of cars, tractors, buses, trucks, cycles and armored vehicles.

The foundation of the legendary small arms production to supply the Imperial Austrian Army, the launch of the "Austro Daimler" in 1905, the first armored wheeled vehicle and today's high-tech armored vehicles ULAN and PANDUR were milestones in the history of the company.
As of today approx. 350 people are employed in the Simmering plant in Vienna.

As early as in 1916 buses and military trucks were produced at the plant. After the second world war and reconstruction of the plant the company extended the premises in the 1980s by purchasing additional land from the city of Vienna. When the headquarter of the Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG was destroyed by fire it was moved to the plant in Simmering. Since 1997 only military vehicles are constructed and produced at the plant.

In 2003 Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug GmbH became a 100 per cent subsidiary of the American "General Dynamics Corporation" and was fully integrated into the "General Dynamics European Land Systems" - a business unit comprising also the European subsidiaries MOWAG GmbH (Switzerland) and Santa Bárbara Sistemas (Spain).
