PANDUR success in Portugal

Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug GmbH     Press Release as PDF-File

The Portuguese Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug GmbH (SSF) of Austria for 260 PANDUR armored wheeled vehicles. 20 of these will be amphibian. All vehicles have 8x8 configuration and will provide a family of 15 different variants to equip the Portuguese Army and Navy. The armament includes variants with Steyr SP 30 turrets and ranges from cal. 12.7 mm machine gun to cal. 120 mm mortar.

The decision in favor of the PANDUR from Steyr is based on the best commercial offer, overall persuasive technical performance during extensive vehicle tests as well as Steyr's guarantee to compensate 150% of the contract value within nine years. Production will run from the year 2006 to 2009 at facilities in Portugal and at plants of General Dynamics European Land Systems. The Portuguese corporation GOM - Gestão de Operações Metalomecânicas - is SSF's local industrial partner and will be responsible for the manufacturing such as welding of the hull, the coordination of the supply of all sub components manufactured in Portugal - for example intercom equipment- and the final assembly, testing and product validation of the PANDUR.
Evaluation of the contenders - Finland's PATRIA AMV, Swiss MOWAG PIRANHA and Austria's STEYR PANDUR - for this procurement program started in autumn 2003.

After Austria, Belgium, Gabon, Kuwait, Slovenia and the United States of America, Portugal is the next country which placed its full confidence in the PANDUR armored wheeled vehicle.
