Steyr SP30 Turret

TURRET CONCEPT

The two-person-turret SP30 is a fully stabilized 30 mm turret with a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and smoke grenade launchers. It is designed for use in all operational tasks of mechanized infantry. It can be employed in various combat roles:
  • Engagement of armored vehicles and soft skin targets
  • Direct fire support to dismounted infantry
  • Air defense capability against low flying (hovering) targets
The turret crew consists of the commander (left side) and gunner (right side), the weapon system consists of a
  • Cal. 30 mm x 173 dual belt-fed automatic cannon MAUSER MK30-2 with a nominal rate of fire of 700 rds/min
  • Cal. 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun (e.g. FN MAG 58)
  • Smoke discharging/close defense system (e.g. Buck/Wegmann cal. 76 mm)
The ammunition for the main weapon and for the machine gun is fed from inside the turret, thus from an armor-protected location. The ammunition supply for the main weapon is stowed in two magazines. Switching between the two ammunition types is possible without loss of time or ammunition rounds.

Ammunition system Caliber Ready Total
Ammunition type 1 (right feed) 30 mm x 173 120
Ammunition type 2 (left feed) 30 mm x 173 80 200
MG-ammunition 7.62 mm x 51 600 600
Smoke discharger system 76 mm 12 36

On request the turret can also be prepared with necessary provisions for the integration of:
  • Battle management system
  • Defense aid suits (e.g. laser warning system)
Environmental Conditions
The turret has been designed to be operable day and night and under various climatic conditions and is NBC-tight for use with an overpressure NBC-protection system.

Logistics and Operation
  • Simple and easy training and operation
  • High degree of availability with minimal maintenance effort and simplicity in maintenance operations
  • Cost-efficiency in operation, maintenance and servicing
  • Upgrading and growth potential already considered in design concept
BIT Concept
The turret is equipped with electronic devices which permanently monitor the function of the various control systems such as the turret drive stabilization system and the thermal fire control system. A built-in test (BIT) for these systems is performed at startup or can be initiated manually.

Turret Drive and Stabilization System (TDSS)
The turret is equipped with an electromechanical turret and weapon drive system. The turret uses a primary stabilized Line of Sight (LOS) and a slaved gun. The drive systems have enough power reserve to carry additional add-on armor. Control handles for the commander and the gunner are provided. The commander has override priority over the gunner. In case of emergency the turret can be operated by the gunner's manual back-up system. A deck clearance device limits depression of the weapons and also interrupts the firing sequence in certain areas. For safety reasons the power system can only be operated with closed vehicle hatch covers, a sealed override switch for emergency situations is provided.

Thermal Fire Control System (TFCS)
The TFCS is a compact and fully automated Fire Control System, using state-of-the-art technologies in digital computers, thermal vision, display and control systems. The TFCS is a modular Dual Axis Independent Stabilized Thermal Fire Control System that provides the ability to hit targets day and night, from stationary positions and on the move at long ranges with high first-round hit probabilities. A coincidence window, which electronically blocks firing when Line of Sight and Line of Fire do not match, increases hit probability, manual override is possible for emergency situations.

Automatic Target Tracker (ATT)
The Automatic Target Tracker (ATT) is a computerbased system which assists the gunner and commander in tracking targets. The ATT receives the image as viewed through the sights, processes it, and controls the Line of Sight servo-control and gun and turret stabilization system to maintain the aiming reticule on target.

Sighting Equipment
The gunner's sight is a dual-axis stabilized LOS comprising a periscopic sight, a thermal channel (2nd or optional 3rd generation TI) shown on a display unit, an eyesafe laser range finder and an optional TV day channel. The commander's sighting equipment consists of a periscopic day sight (optional periscopic day/night sight) and a display unit showing the image of the thermal channel.
Apart from the commander's and gunner's sights the turret is equipped with a total of 6 observation episcopes. All episcopes have protective laser filters and covers to prevent light emission.

Ballistic Protection
Turret basic ballistic protection (welded armor steel parent structure, 95% protection relating to the turret surface, protection effect including spall liners):
  • Against cal. 14.5 mm API all around
  • Against cal. 30 mm APFSDS frontal
  • Against fragments of 155 mm HE (@ 10 m)
